la collina Syrah 2018
2018 la collina Syrah was released in November 2020

We are extremely pleased to be releasing the 2018 la collina after what appears to be a protracted 2 year hiatus. The very first vintage was 2002 and with the desire to maintain the integrity of this special single vineyard site, we have not released la collina in four vintages since then. There was no la collina released from the 2003, 2011, 2012 and 2017 vintages.
Hawke's Bay has had a great run since the difficulties of the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Not releasing la collina in 2017 was related both to the difficult end of season and also because we have been reworking the older vines to limit the effects of trunk disease which can be catastrophic to the long term health and viability of the vineyard if left unmanaged. 2017 was a very similar vintage to 2011 where a very dry summer turned into a very wet and humid autumn.
As with most Hawke’s Bay vintages there was some rain in 2018 before the harvest of the la collina fruit but the hillside site, with gravity and Autumnal winds on its side, allows for the impact of rain to be minimal. Skill, patience and vines and fruit in good condition before the rain means we were well placed to see out wet weather events.
We maintain our winemaking philosophy of trying to preserve the very distinct vineyard character and fruit purity in order that each vintage produced is a reflection of the site whilst also saying “I’m from Hawke’s Bay”. Berries and Hawke's Bay spice, weighty yet unobtrusive, fine tannins and a beautifully balanced palate. Light on its feet but not light in stature.
Great to drink now. Cellar some and enjoy again, and again, over the next 15 - 20 years.
Joe Czerwinski, Robert Parker Wine Advocate 17 April 2020
"While other Hawke's Bay Syrahs can marry soaring peppery spice with ripe fruit, the 2018 la collina is more jasmine, violets - maybe even roses - and subtle spices, all seamlessly blended with ripe red berries. It's just medium bodied but it's concentrated and silky in texture with a long, elegant finish and great inner-mouth perfume."
