la collina

The la collina vineyard is a steep, terraced and incline planted hillside vineyard on the North/ Northwest facing slopes of Roys Hill, west of Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The hillside is protected from the cooling effects of the southerly and southwesterly winds and during the growing season is bathed in sunshine. The terraces are planted to Syrah whilst the lowers slopes and Gravels flat are planted to Viognier and Chardonnay.

In 1997, we purchased 6 hectares of land at Roys Hill overlooking the ancient riverbed of the Ngaruroro River, both North and South facing. The South side has great views out to Te Mata Peak and the Havelock North hills but it is the North/Northwest facing side of the hill provides the most excitement. The top of the la collina vineyard is a steep, terraced and incline planted hillside vineyard planted to Syrah. This hillside is protected from the cooling effects of the southerly and southwesterly winds and during the growing season, it is bathed in sunshine.

The first vines were planted on the upper hillside in 1998 and planting continued over the next couple of years, moving down the hill, finishing on the flat, river gravels with Viognier in 2001. In 2008, as a result of a Chardonnay epiphany, part of the Viognier vineyard was top grafted to Chardonnay. The success of this change over led us to replanting a large part of the remaining Viognier vineyard to Chardonnay in 2012 and 2013.

The hillside subsoil type is sandstone/limestone, which can be managed unirrigated in all but the driest of seasons. The site is frost-free and due to the windy aspect has extremely low disease pressure. Bunch and berry sizes are very small and the crop levels are self-regulating due to harshness of the flowering conditions. Normal crop loading is less than 1 kg per vine. This truly unique site expresses itself in the aromatics and textural qualities of the resulting wine. Provencal herbs (Thyme, Rosemary and Lavender) have been planted on the terraces for stability and aesthetics, and it is said that nuances of these appear in the aromatics and flavour of the wine.

The lower, flatter and slightly inclining part of the vineyard is planted to Chardonnay and Viognier. This part of the vineyard is where the Ngaruroro River used to meet the hillside and the base is river gravels with a thin silt/soil layer on top.

There is also a small parcel of Nebbiolo vines on the hillside that is destined to entertain the Barolo fascination!

la collina Syrah is a wine that has been lauded in every vintage that has been produced, 2002 – 2010, (no 2003). It is our flagship, single vineyard wine.

Oz Clarke Shows That New Zealand Wine is the Real Deal
“…the 2010 Bilancia la collina from Hawke’s Bay and the 2010 Trinity Hill “Homage” Hawke’s Bay (both crafted by the same winemaker, Warren Gibson) – that they might have surpassed Le Sol. These weren’t just the best New Zealand Syrahs, they’re undeniably two of the best in the world.”

la collina viognier 2014

In the midst of replanting quite a bit of the lower la collina vineyard area to Chardonnay, we did retain a few rows (eight) of Viognier in order to make this wine and have Viognier to coferment with our Syrah. 2014 la collina Viognier is predominantly Viognier but it does include a small amount of ...
