la collina Syrah 2019
The 2019 vintage marked the beginning of an amazing run of vintages for Hawke's Bay and this great vintage coincided with a slight increase in production with vineyard reworkings coming into play.
The 2019 growing season in Hawke's Bay was ideal in almost every way. Good rainfall in Spring provided the vines with plenty of water at the right time then January and February were warm and dry, ideal conditions for ripening grapes. As we got closer to harvest there was minimal rainfall and no disease pressure and the grapes were able to ripen perfectly; picking decisions were easy.
We harvested la collina Syrah over a few days in early April, finishing on April 4. The two of us harvested the whole hillside ourselves, tipping the picking buckets of grapes into larger picking bins and allowing the ferment to begin spontaneously in the vineyard. We added fruit to this ferment each day, with each new bucket picked. Once we had finished harvest we moved the bins to the winery for the remainder of the fermentation, tipping the fruit into open top fermentation vessels.
After fermentation and pressing the wine was transferred to barrel and was pretty much left to its own devices (we did keep many eyes on it) until taken from these barrels in November 2020 for bottling.
As always, our aim is to reflect the unique vineyard site in this single vineyard wine. Each vintage of la collina is a snapshot of the vineyard in that year and no two vintages will ever be exactly the same. The 2019 la collina is powerful yet elegant with ripe, bright fruit and spice coupled with great weight and length on the palate. This is a great wine to enjoy now but will live for many years in your cellar.

"The palate is defined by long, tensile tannins and holds such pure fresh-fruit flavor in an intense, deep and focused finish. Power with elegance and purity here. Excellent syrah. Their finest release to date."
