Bilancia 2013 Pinot Gris

Hawke's Bay Pinot Gris fruit from Black Bridge vineyard, by the coast at Haumoana, hand harvested in great condition and at optimum ripeness. Whole bunch pressed to tank for cold settling and then racked and fermented slowly to retain fresh fruit characters. The finished wine is almost completely dry, relying on the texture and the quality of the fruit to carry the palate.

The aromatics of Pinot Gris are gentle, lifted florals, pears and spice. The palate is rich and textural, as Pinot Gris should be, with hints of spice on the finish. Texture is an important character for Pinot Gris building from great fruit quality and attention to balance during winemaking.

As always with Bilancia Pinot Gris, enjoy on release but also be rewarded after a few years cellaring. This wine should hold well for 4 – 6 years.

Bilancia Chardonnay 2013

100% Hawke's Bay fruit sourced from la collina Vineyard

The white varietal la collina vineyard has been in a redevelopment phase for a number of years, initially in 2007 when we top grafted some of the Viognier vines on the flat, heavier soiled wash from the slopes over to Chardonnay. The success of this part of the project lead us to replanting much of the flat and lower slopes of the vineyard to Chardonnay.

The 2013 Bilancia Chardonnay is the fourth wine from la collina vineyard. The fruit was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and the free run juice was then run straight to barrel, with no cold settling, for fermentation in French oak barrels. From the press, each subsequent barrel had less solids in the juice. The juice was not inoculated with yeast but rather, the indigenous yeast were allowed to carry the fermentation to dryness. The wine spent 10 months in barrel prior to bottling; there was no fining or cold stabilisation.

The aim is to produce a wine that reflects the vineyard from where it came. It shows tight wine with emphasis on a fresh, food friendly style and evenly balanced palate.

This wine is ready to drink on release and will continue to develop positively for 4 – 6 years.
